LPDW is a software package developed through
EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) used for analysis of the lightning performance
of various electric power line configurations. My initial involvement with this
project included modifications and feature enhancements for version 3 written in Actor, a
purely object oriented development language developed by Whitewater Group Inc. that was
elegant and similar to Smalltalk but died under pressure from Borland C++. So, for version 4,
we moved the entire project to Visual Basic and as part of that release, I added the Active X
mapping tool seen here. Features included calculating and plotted lightning density and
electric system component locations over geographic and political boundary reference layers,
zoom in/out, panning, automatic scaling, color selection and selected region reporting. The
lightning data came from the NLDN (National Lightning Detection Network).
